What is the best inventory management software for a small business?
It depends on whether you need integrations. Sortly, Katana, inFlow and Cin7 run roughly $30-$300 a month and earn it if you sync with Shopify, Amazon or a 3PL. OwnDesk Inventory is for the business that does not: stock, purchase orders, sales orders, suppliers and production, for a single payment, on your own computer. No channel sync, no barcode hardware integration, no API. If your stock lives in one place and the problem is that it currently lives in a spreadsheet, this is the cheaper correct answer.
Why does stock have to be tracked by movement instead of a quantity field?
Because a quantity field can only be overwritten, and once it is wrong you have no way to find out why. Here an item has no quantity of its own – on-hand is the sum of every receipt, sale, build, count and correction, each with a date and a reason. It is the difference between a number you can trace and a number you can only argue with, and it is what lets the app answer “why is my count wrong?”
Is there free inventory software for small business?
Free tiers exist and are typically capped at 100 items or one user, and they tend to hold your data behind an export button. This is paid once, with no item limit, and everything comes out as CSV – which opens straight in Excel or Google Sheets – whenever you want it, including the day you decide to leave.
Can it handle purchase orders and partial deliveries?
Yes. Raise a purchase order against a supplier, receive it in full or in part, and the outstanding balance stays visible until it closes. Each receipt is a movement, so the stock figure and the paperwork can never drift apart.
Does it connect to Shopify, Amazon or my shipping carrier?
No. It is an offline single file with no API and no integrations, so orders are entered rather than imported. That is the honest limit of this design – if your volume comes from marketplaces, you want a connected platform and I would rather you bought one than bought this and were disappointed.
